Caught between humanitarian commitment to vulnerable populations and security concerns, the issue of the use of armed escorts by humanitarian organisations raises some fraught questions. Médecins Sans Frontières has adopted this practice, controversial as it is, in a number of contexts throughout its history. Can we resort to this type of protection without compromising our neutrality? Are MSF's image and the very safety of its teams threatened by being so close to armed actors?

Invité par Mémona Hintermann au Festival International de Géographie à Saint-Dié-des-Vosges en Septembre 2023, Rony Brauman revient sur son livre publié en 2018, "Guerres humanitaires ? Mensonges et intox". En évoquant plusieurs exemples d'interventions, notamment en Irak, en Libye ou encore au Kosovo, il critique l'obsession occidentale d’imposer les valeurs démocratiques, par l'usage d'un prétendu « droit d'ingérence » et en s’appuyant sur les critères de la « guerre juste », dont les guerres humanitaires n'en sont que la formulation contemporaine.

Throughout the 1990s, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was forced to face the challenges posed by the genocide of Rwandan Tutsis and a succession of major outbreaks of political violence in Rwanda and its neighbouring countries.

Rony Brauman focuses on the humanitarian environment and practices in war, in order to try to understand and analyze its political and ethical stakes. Starting with the creation of the Red Cross at the end of the XIXth century, he then focused on the contemporary postcolonial period, switching between various scales and reporting on contradictory points of view and issues.
