Welcome to La zone critique, the Crash podcast hosted by Judith Soussan and Fabrice Weissman. Enjoy new episodes every month in our series: C'est quoi le problème, Les ficelles du métier, Les experts.

Needs, principles, access, security, community, development, global health... C’est quoi le problème ? (What's the issue?) deciphers humanitarian jargon and its clichés. Each episode tackles a term or phrase with ambiguous or debatable meanings, highlighting how their significance can be problematic, misleading, or overused.

How I negotiated with al-Qaeda, managed an explosive social conflict, failed my response to a cholera outbreak, built connections with Haitian gang leaders, persuaded the Ministry of Health to adopt a new care protocol, resolved a team conflict, freed a cargo stuck in customs, counted the dead after a massacre. Les ficelles du métier (The tricks of the trade) highlights the practical knowledge of humanitarian workers. In free and open conversations, our colleagues share their experiences from various operations, reflecting on their successes and failures, and describing how they navigate the unpredictable nature of their missions.

Les experts (The experts) are researchers, journalists, and practitioners who present their work on topics that shed light on humanitarian practices and the contexts in which they unfold, such as the distinction between migrants and refugees, understanding mass violence, and an anthropology of rumors. This provides humanitarian actors with an opportunity to step back and rethink the situations they encounter. Some episodes are audio versions of conferences organized by Crash since 2005, available as videos on our website; others are original interviews.
